Atoll Technologies Plc. participated on the Info-Tech Live 2023 conference held at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas as a sponsor with our EA tool SAMU. Our director of our US Operations Oliver Kocs attended on behalf of Atoll. In the 3-day event we sponsored the second night’s reception where we had a special AI generated cocktail called the SAMU Slinger. The fluorescent blue drink turned out to be a huge success.

In terms of the event, there were over 1500 participants and 32 vendors including Atoll present. The main topic was Exponential IT with a focus on today’s hot topic of AI and how its impact will affect IT and business going forward.  Many of the keynote speakers including some very well-known experts on AI and futurists presented their views on AI. These ranged from positive positions stating that AI will allow humanity to help find cures to diseases and bring about social equality, to counter-arguments where AI will perhaps lead to the demise of all of us, mostly due to the fact that we do not fully understand it.

The reason Atoll decided to sponsor the event was that EA was one of the primary topics of the conference.  As IT continues to grow exponentially EA is an ever more important aspect to help manage and solve the challenges businesses are faced with.  Having a successful EA practice can help mitigate the risks caused by technology, security and AI, by allowing organization better identify those.  SAMU, our EA tool can help your organization in meeting those challenges.  All in all it was an excellent choice to participate on the Info-Tech Live 2023 and we look forward to attending their future events.

I don’t feel like I am something more because I do it, but I feel I’d be a lot less if I didn’t do it. – Peter David, SAMU team member. https://samu.io/i-dont-feel-like-i-am-something-more-because-i-do-it-but-i-feel-id-be-a-lot-less-if-i-didnt-do-it-peter-david-samu-team-member/ Mon, 02 Oct 2023 11:10:25 +0000 https://samu.io/?p=11818 As the first Hungarian, our colleague Péter Dávid is the European Taekwondo champion and bronze medalist at the World Championships, in the IV.-VI. dan category (sabum (instructor)). After Peti closes his laptop at Atoll, he devotes his free time to the Korean martial arts. And for the past seven years, he has also been coaching the team of athletes of the Sasok Taekwondo division in Köbánya in Budapest.

In the last few months, you have achieved huge sporting successes, please tell me more about them.

The official European Championship of the ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) was held in Cluj this April, where in the dan category IV-VI, I was able to stand on the top step of the podium. And in September in Finland, at the world championship, I won a bronze medal in the category IV-VI dan formative category. There are 9 dans in the sport of taekwondo, and the VI. dan is the highest degree, among which a competition is held.

On behalf of Atoll, let me give you a heartfelt congratulations on your success. Can you please elaborate on the road that got you here?

I was preparing to obtain the V. dan category, when it occurred to me that if I was physically ready, after the successful completion of the exam, it would be worthwhile to register for the European Championship. Both my coach and wife were very supportive of my decision. Unfortunately, I didn’t achieve the V. dan category – breaking bricks didn’t work for me, but overall this did not disappoint me that much. However, since I had not competed in this category before, I had no great expectations of myself and my performance and thus started the competition with the calmness of an underdog.

Instead you won a gold medal, which is impressive! 🙂 What do you think ultimately led to your success?

By that time, I had reached the point where I didn’t feel any pressure, and I approached the competition in a good mood. I was driven to see what I could achieve in the given situation. The competition started, with the form exercise and I continuously focused only on the next task at hand. When I won the 4th form exercise and thus reached the final round, I only then realized how far I had come. From that point on, the desire to keep going was all that was on my mind! I somehow ended up winning the European championship, I had won the competition!

At the World Championship, I think I was lucky with the draw, as I had strong opponents, but it could have been much more difficult. Throughout the competition, I focused only on myself and what I could control and tried not to think about the stakes in front of me. In the end, I managed to bring home the bronze medal.

At the European Championship you did not yet have the V. dan category, if I understand correctly?

No not yet. After the EC success, László Harmath, IX. Dan Grandmaster, and the founder of Hungarian Taekwondo, decided to grant it.

Let’s take a trip back in time, tell me how this Korean martial art became part your life?

I grew up in Békéscsaba and my mother first took my older sister to do taekwondo, because then she would be able to manage both her own sporting needs by doing fitness while also babysitting at the same time. Then somehow all three of us found ourselves participating on the taekwondo classes. Our family was completely hooked by this sport and thus all of us in the family, apart from my father, actively play this sport. Fortunately, my wife also supports me in this and actually goes to practices for herself. I wouldn’t be able to do this without her and without the support of my family. It also helps that Atoll is very flexible with working hours, and if I am not working on a project deadline, I am able to finish my work, off hours after training.

However, this is not an easy sport and we can probably say that it is also not one of the most popular. What do martial arts give you?

It’s hard to answer that. In fact, it has become such a part of my life that I can’t imagine life without it, it’s just something that I need to do. There was a 2-year gap that I took around graduation, and this wasn’t good. I had the feeling that I was missing something. The community is very good and I would miss it if I stopped. I’m don’t feel like I am something more because I do it, but I feel I’d be a lot less if I didn’t do it.

What are your plans for the near future? What is your next goal?

Next year there will be another EC, and this would be the next competition that I plan to compete in, and after that, the next World Championship will be held in Croatia, which is quite close to us geographically, and thus I would like to participate on that as well. The competitions are very physically demanding, so I think that after these competitions, I will decide to retire and continue to do this sport as a coach and just as a hobby.

It is with great pride to see that the Atoll development team is strengthened by such a dedicated person, who demonstrates such great concentration and perseverance outside of work! We once again heartily congratulate you on your achievement and we wish you much success in the upcoming competitions!

We Planted Trees in the Courtyard of Homoktövis Nursery https://samu.io/we-planted-trees-in-the-courtyard-of-homoktovis-nursery/ Wed, 19 May 2021 12:45:35 +0000 https://samu.io/?p=12845 Atoll Technologeis  Ltd. (developer of SAMU) participated in the planting of sixteen trees in the yard of the Homoktövis Nursery in Budapest. In just a few hours, the employees of the company, together with the team of the 10 Million Trees (10 Millió Fa) NGO, contributed to the creation of a more livable and friendly nursery courtyard on 14 May.

Since 2019, the 10 Million Trees NGO has been operating in an ever-increasing number of places, small towns, villages, county seats, and districts of the capital. The planting work is assisted by a central team of experts consisting of foresters, gardeners, ecologists, and often with the involvement of the local population of the community. This was also the case during the spring time work done in the courtyard of the Homoktövis Nursery. Many residents of Káposztásmegyer gave their time and energy and contributed to the creation of a more livable environment along with the volunteers from Atoll.

As an IT company, we strive to play our part in the fight for the environmental sustainability. In addition to day-to-day support activities, we organized a company community day every year where our employees can volunteer their time and efforts to a dedicated environmental task. Despite the pandemic, it was a pleasure to see that most of our staff was willing to participate in the tree planting activity. We hope that the trees we planted will adorn the yard of the institution for a long time. ” – said Imre Juhász, the Managing Director of Atoll Technologies Ltd.

Visualizing an AWS cloud environment https://samu.io/visualizing-an-aws-cloud-environment/ Fri, 25 May 2018 12:55:16 +0000 https://samuio2.atoll.local/?p=8648
For obvious reasons, we model cloud environments as part of the enterprise architecture universe. SAMU’s API and the data synchronization module enable our clients to integrate SAMU to basically anything and exchange data. In this demo we used the sync module to create a data stream from the ever-changing Amazon Web Services and visualize it.

You see the video below, but let me sum up how I did it:

1. Setup the trial AWS account and an empty SAMU application

I created a test AWS account with few free-tier services (EC2, RDS, VPCs, etc). Beyond the basic attributes of the services, I also wanted to link them to higher architecture components, such as business applications they are used for. Therefore, I made a template for provisioning new AWS resources with two tags: App tag includes the name of the application the server / RDS is used for and a Purpose tag, which refers to the type of the environment, eg. Production / Test / Development / etc. You’ll see soon, how we are using these…

I also installed an empty SAMU repository, where we’ll load the data to.

2. Query AWS info through CLI

You can query a wealth of environmental information through the AWS Command Line Interface, which I used for the purpose of the demo. With few shell scripts I generated CSV files that contained basic information about the EC2 instances, the RDS I’m using and other components, such as the availability zones, virtual private clouds and so on.

Note that you don’t need to create CSVs, but can load them into temp SQL tables, for example.

3. Define sync jobs in SAMU Sync module to load the CSV files into SAMU

SAMU natively offers an Excel importing wizard for users to perform easy data bulk loads. Instead of using that, I opted for the SAMU Sync module in order to define sync jobs which can be executed automatically. I will start the first job manually (so you would see it working) and all the subsequent jobs run automatically.

4. Log in SAMU and visualize the AWS environment

Once the data is in SAMU, the tool can visualize any segment of the architecture graph. Since dependencies and relationships among various components come across the integration, you can browse and drill down into any area.

For instance, we load EC2 instances as objects in SAMU and we also load availability zones and regions as objects too. We relate the relevant objects, eg EC2 XYZ operates in Region us-east-2. You can click the Region us-east-2 and drill down to visualize all EC2 instances as well as RDS instances related to it.

Location view in SAMU generated for a selected region (us-east-2). It displays the services (EC2 and RDS) within the availability zones. It also shows the business applications the services are used for (linked to the application’s various environments, such as production / test / development / etc). You can open the data sheet of any components in SAMU and see the attributes we pulled over from AWS.

As said, I added two tags for each EC2 and RDS: App and Purpose. During the data sync I create (or update if existing) Application objects corresponding to the value of the App tag. In our best practice meta-model we have an intermediary component between Applications and Virtual Servers, which we call Application Environment. Application Environments represent the running instances of the logical applications. For example if you look at SAMU Application, you might have a SAMU Production Application Environment, but also a SAMU Test or SAMU Sandbox environments – all of them running on perhaps different set of Virtual Servers. In the demo, I also create Application Environments automatically based on these two tags.

Enough talking… check out the video below. If you’ve got questions, feel free to reach out at https://samu.io/start-free-samu-trial/

Taming the IoT Wild Wild West with Enterprise Architecture https://samu.io/taming-iot-wild-wild-west-enterprise-architecture/ Mon, 05 Mar 2018 10:25:01 +0000 https://samuio2.atoll.local/?p=8605
Guest post by Charles Araujo, Principal Analyst, Intellyx
Just as was the case with the settling of the American West, today’s technology settlers are flocking ‘West’ to new territory in search of new fortunes and futures. This new territory, the Internet of Things (IoT), is in a period of rampant expansion, endless opportunity, and few rules. It is unquestionably the Wild Wild West of technology.

The Internet of Things refers to a broad category of smart and connected devices that includes a vast range of endpoints including industrial equipment sensors, smart appliances, smart cars, geo-beacons and just about everything else in between. The common denominator is that these smart devices exist at the enterprise’s edge collecting data and sharing it with core systems, often providing at-edge analytics, and sometimes performing automated actions – all without human interaction.

As enterprises have realized the potential business value and competitive benefits that smart devices can provide, they have rushed to deploy them and incorporate them into their commercial products – resulting in an explosion of enterprise use cases.

In most organizations, this rapid expansion of IoT deployments has happened with little strategic oversight as business leaders focused on seizing advantage. But this Wild Wild West approach now leaves enterprises in a precarious position as they begin to grapple with the security, data governance, and architectural complexities incumbent in this vast new technology territory.

“As organizations exit their Wild Wild West phase, they must adopt an IoT strategy within the context of their broader enterprise architecture (EA)…”

Enterprise Architecture and Your IoT Strategy

As organizations continue their investment in IoT and begin to take a more strategic view of their deployments, they are coming to terms with the significant issues and risks that they bring.

The strategic challenges span security, governance, and operational concerns and include increased attack surfaces, data governance issues, and operational manageability. As great as IoT’s business value and competitive benefits may be, its deployment also increases business risk as organizations embed smart devices into critical business processes and essential elements of the customer experience.

The good news for most enterprise organizations is that they have faced many of these challenges before and have already embraced a discipline to help address them: enterprise architecture.

As organizations exit their Wild Wild West phase, they must adopt an IoT strategy within the context of their broader enterprise architecture (EA) rather than attempting to create it in an independent – and isolated – fashion.

Incorporating this strategy into their broader enterprise architecture will enable organizations to address its challenges in a holistic fashion, which will be essential as complexity increases.

For instance, enterprises must be able to address the flow and governance of device-generated data, device connectivity, the use of shared infrastructure (perhaps including the use of shared devices), and IoT specific infrastructure elements such as gateways and data collectors – all within the context of the organization’s entire technology stack.

Your Path to IoT Success

While EA will be essential to helping organizations tame their IoT deployments and thus realize the business and competitive value they seek, organizations must first focus on several important elements as they apply it to this still-developing domain.

Rather than spending resources on standards and establishing strict architectural guidelines at this stage of development, organizations should instead focus on creating architectural models that protect the integrity and fidelity of data consumed at the edge and as it flows throughout the enterprise.

Moreover, these architectural models should center on ensuring security and manageability throughout the architecture, but without imposing limitations that will inhibit the organization’s ability to experiment with new IoT use cases and applications.

WEBINAR: 14 March (Wednesday), 12:00 EDT / 16:00 GMT - The Surprising Role of EA on Your IoT Strategy

The goal of applying EA in an IoT context is no different than in other parts of the architecture: to create a strategic, macro view of the technology stack within the context of the business and its priorities to ensure security, manageability, and interoperability without unnecessarily inhibiting the organization’s ability to innovate or operate.

When it comes to IoT and its rapidly evolving state, however, organizations must deftly apply EA principles to ensure that they are providing sufficient oversight and control, but no more.

Most importantly, as organizations apply EA to their IoT strategies, it will be critical that they remain laser-focused on the business context, the business value and competitive advantage they seek to create, and the impact of these strategies on the customer, partner, and employee experience.

The Intellyx Take

On the one hand, applying EA to IoT strategies makes perfect sense. EA’s original purpose was to address the very issues that IoT deployments are now facing – and to do so from a business perspective.

The challenge, of course, is not with EA principles, but with the overly dogmatic manner in which many enterprises have applied EA in practice. Early IoT advocates have steadfastly resisted the application of EA to IoT strategy because of a well-justified fear that doing so would stifle innovation.

The implications of IoT deployments and the risks that they are now introducing, however, make continuing down this path untenable. Organizations must overcome these fears and adapt their EA practices to account for the experimental and dynamic nature of IoT deployments.

An important element of this practice adaptation will be the adoption of tools, such as SAMU, that help organizations break through the dogmatic application of EA and strike this balance of flexibility and just enough control.

Adapting EA practices and striking this balance will now become a strategic advantage in and of itself, as those organizations that do so successfully will find that they alone can harness the competitive value and business benefits of IoT while mitigating the security risks and operational complexity that it brings.

can you control the flood of IoT data in your systems?

The Internet of Things (IoT), smart devices, the ‘new’ edge — whatever you might want to call it, we are in the midst of a veritable gold rush as organization hurry to instrument and deploy sensors on, well, everything. Amid such a frenzied urgency, things like strategic planning and architecture tend to fall by the wayside.

As organizations mature their IoT initiatives, however, they are finding this Wild Wild West approach has left them vulnerable to unexpected complexities and consequences — particularly as the data from these IoT devices flood their systems. As a result, they are turning back to the discipline of Enterprise Architecture (EA) and leveraging it in surprising ways to help tame their IoT environments and deploy them at enterprise scale.

In this interactive discussion Charles Araujo, Principal Analyst with Intellyx, will join Peter Lakhegyi from Atoll, to discuss EA’s surprising role in the evolution and maturity of IoT strategies.
